A minor earthquake with a magnitude of 3.4 on the Richter scale struck near Hlegu Township on the night of May 6, prompting alarm among residents in parts of Yangon.
According to a statement issued by the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology, the earthquake occurred at 10: 55: 36 pm local time. The epicenter was located approximately 10 miles south-southwest of Hlegu at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Although the quake was relatively mild, it was felt in various parts of Yangon, particularly in high-rise residential areas in townships such as Thaketa, Sanchaung, Kyimyindaing, and Hlaing. Concerned about the possibility of aftershocks, many residents evacuated their apartments and took shelter on the streets.
“Previously we came downstairs when we heard warnings about an impending quake. But this time, the earthquake already happened, and we’re afraid more might follow. That’s why we are staying outside,” said a resident from Thaketa Township.
Authorities have not reported any injuries or damage as a result of the quake. However, officials urge the public to remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines in the event of future tremors.
