Myanmar needs to engage in CNG (compressed natural gas) business in Nay Pyi Taw and other regions in addition to Yangon to seek the way to green energy and green economy in future, said Union Minister for Electricity and Energy Win Khaing.

He said the use of CNG in transport sector would contribute towards carbon reduction and clean air.

More than 23 million cubic feet of CNG from onshore oil and gas fields are distributed daily for passenger buses operating with CNG, according to the ministry.

A total of 28,299 vehicles have been converted to CNG ones. And there are 46 CNG stations in Myanmar—41 in Yangon Region two in Mandalay Region and three in Magway Region. 

Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE) established three filling stations in 1986 distributing CNG. CNG is sold at Ks273.25 per kilogram and over 510,000 kilograms are sold every day.

MOGE is coordinating with the Yangon Region government to open more CNG stations to prevent traffic congestion caused by a limited number of stations in the region. 

With the use of new CNG compressors at the CNG stations, filling has become speedier and waiting time for buses to fill the gas has been reduced.

CNG is mostly used in transport of passengers and goods as its price is three times lower than other fuels.
