As of April 7, official figures confirm that the devastating earthquake in Myanmar has resulted in 3,600 deaths, 5,017 injuries, and 160 missing persons, says Major-General Zaw Min Tun, spokesperson of the State Administration Council.
“Up to today, April 7, we have confirmed a total of 3,600 fatalities, 5,017 injuries, and 160 people still unaccounted for due to the earthquake. The government expresses deep sorrow and condolences for those who have lost their lives or loved ones,” said Major General Zaw Min Tun.
Since the disaster struck, 94 relief flights, six vehicles, and five boats from 20 different countries have arrived to assist in the ongoing rescue and relief operations.
Currently, 1,738 international rescue personnel have been deployed to the affected areas, along with more than 1,281 tons of supplies and over 844 rescue items, according to the spokesperson.
Efforts by Myanmar’s Fire Services Department, local volunteer groups, and international rescue teams have led to the successful rescue of 653 survivors—338 men and 315 women. Additionally, 700 bodies have been recovered—340 men and 360 women.
Countries involved in rescue missions and aid delivery include Russia, China, Hong Kong, India, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Vietnam, UAE, Laos, Belarus, Indonesia, Bhutan, the Philippines, Japan, Nepal, Pakistan, Turkey, the United States, and Sri Lanka, among others.
The earthquake occurred at 12:51:02 PM local time on March 28, striking approximately 20 kilometers northeast of Mandalay city with a magnitude of 7.7 on the Richter scale. The tremor caused widespread destruction across Sagaing Region, Mandalay Region, Magway Region, northeastern Shan State, the Nay Pyi Taw Council area, and Bago Region.
Search, rescue, and relief operations are still ongoing in the quake-hit regions.
