Mandalay Region Chief Minister released, placed under house arrest

National League for Democracy Vice Chair (2) and Mandalay Region Chief Minister Dr Zaw Myint Maung was reportedly released from detention and placed under house arrest at about 10 am on February 2.

Currently, Dr Zaw Myint Maung and his family have been asked to pack their property and move out of their government housing, according to a source close to him.

Some cabinet members of the Mandalay Region including the chief minister were taken and detained in the Mandalay Palace after the military declared a state of emergency. Some of the detainees were sent back to their homes under security.

On February 1, Mandalay City Development Committee Chairman and Mayor Dr Ye Lwin and some regional ministers were also released and sent back home.
