MYIKYINA-----Former president of the Kachin Baptist Convention (KBC) Dr. Hkalam Samson who is now chairman of Kachin National Consultative Assembly appeared in the court of Myitkyina Prison in Kachin State yesterday in person for the first time, according to the sources.
Currently, he is being charged with Section 17 (1) of Unlawful Association and Section 505(a) of the Penal Code on incitement.
A person who was close to the KBC former president said that he[Dr. Hkalam Samson] can’t meet with his family members at his first appearance of a court. He will be appeared at a court again on January 13th.
Dr. Hkalam Samson was detained at the Tata-U Airport in Mandalay Region in the morning of December 5th of 2022. Later, he was sent to Myitkyina Prison on December 28th.
Rev Samson had acted as a secretary and chairman at the KBC for 12 years. Now, he is a KBC’s advisor. Moreover, he is a chairman of Kachin National Consultative Assembly (WMR). In July 18th of 2019, he met with U.S. President Donald Trump at White House. Later, high-ranking military officer from Northern Command opened a lawsuit against defamation for comments of armed conflicts at the Myitkyina Township Court on August 26th of 2019. However, Tatmadaw[military] withdrew the lawsuit on September 9th.
