Forum explores opportunities for collaboration in mining, mineral exploration, technology, and investment.

MANDALAY - An India–Myanmar Forum on Mining and Minerals Cooperation opened in Mandalay on July 22, bringing together government officials, diplomats, and business representatives to discuss opportunities for collaboration in the mining and minerals sector.

The two-day forum, held on July 22–23 at the Mandalay Region Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MRCCI), is jointly organized by the Consulate General of India and the Mandalay Region Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MRCCI).

Speaking at the forum, Mandalay Region Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation Daw Theingi Aung highlighted Myanmar's abundant mineral resources and outlined opportunities for bilateral cooperation in mineral exploration and mining development.

According to the minister, mining permits covering 20 types of minerals have been granted by the Union government and the Mandalay Region government across 12 townships in the region, while applications have also been submitted to conduct exploration for four additional mineral types.

She noted that Myanmar's Department of Geological Survey and Mineral Exploration has been conducting geological surveys, mineral exploration, and geological mapping. However, nationwide exploration has yet to be completed, and cooperation with experienced Indian geologists could generate significant benefits for both countries.

The minister also said India has decades of experience in the mining industry and possesses advanced mining technologies. She noted that Myanmar still faces limitations in mineral processing and refining technologies and said closer cooperation with India could help improve technological capabilities, facilitate knowledge exchange, strengthen bilateral relations, and promote investment in Myanmar's mining sector.

She added that the government would welcome Indian investment in the sector and provide the necessary support to facilitate cooperation.

Officials also noted that the current forum is the first of its kind and expressed hope that future meetings would allow for more detailed discussions once India's areas of interest in specific minerals and mining projects are identified.

The forum was attended by the Indian Ambassador to Myanmar, the Consul General of India in Mandalay, government officials, and business representatives from both India and Myanmar.
