Illegal land sales reported in Pyin Oo Lwin

Authorities in Pyin Oo Lwin have warned that unscrupulous business operators are illegally selling land without lawful usage rights through brokers on social media platforms, according to a statement issued by the Pyin Oo Lwin District Administration and Management Committee.

The committee said it has discovered cases in which farmland, forest land, vacant and virgin land, and other state-owned land adjacent to ward or village land—officially designated under government gazette notifications—are being falsely claimed as falling within municipal or village boundaries. These lands, which do not have legal permission for use, are being subdivided, fenced, developed with permanent structures, and sold unlawfully.

Despite prior public notices published in state-owned newspapers to ensure lawful land use and transactions, illegal land sales continue on the ground. Brokers acting on behalf of profit-driven business operators are reportedly advertising and selling such land through online social media platforms, including Facebook and TikTok.

The district committee noted that some buyers unknowingly fall victim to these fraudulent transactions, while others proceed despite being aware of the illegality. As a result, individuals involved have suffered financial losses and, in some cases, faced legal action.

Relevant departments and organizations are conducting on-site inspections and taking effective legal action against illegal land use and transactions. Authorities have cautioned the public that purchasing land without proper legal authorization may lead to serious losses and legal consequences.

The committee emphasized that public awareness announcements on lawful land use have already been issued and reiterated that strict enforcement will continue against violations of land-use regulations.

Pyin Oo Lwin Township is currently being systematically developed as a Clean City, Green City, and Smart City, with efforts underway to protect the natural environment and prevent ecological damage, officials said.
