Heavy rain triggers severe floods in PyinOoLwin

Heavy rain has caused severe floods in in PyinOoLwin of Mandalay Region since the morning of July 31, local sources say.

The Gelaung Creek, a major creek in the town of PyinOoLwin, is swelling and consequently, nearby communities are in flood. Even some houses are being flooded, local people reported.

“In my house, the water level is as deep as my chest. I have never experienced it,” said a local resident.

An official from PyinOoLwin Thantithukha social aid organization also said: “We can’t see the creek because it is already in flood. Low-lying areas are in severe flood. Now we have to be evacuating those trapped in the floods. Some houses have submerged about half. The Moe Nyo Monastery area is hardest hit. Cars are under water.”

He added that it had been raining heavily since 3am today, triggering severe floods.
