Thura U Aung Ko, who served as Union Minister for Religious Affairs and Culture under the National League for Democracy government and was serving his prison term, has been released, reports say.
He was released on the evening of February 3.
Former Union Minister Thura U Aung Ko was sentenced to 12 years in prison on March 14, 2022 under the anti-corruption law for receiving bribes in relation to the presentation of eight religious titles to individuals by the State, the acceptance of a Ford Everest Titanium car worth K100.5 million from a businessman and the acceptance of a gold plate weighing about 20 ticals. However, his sentence was reduced by half under a pardon from the chairman of the State Administration Council on the same day.
Likewise, writer U Htin Lin Oo serving a prison term of three years under Section 505 (A) of the penal code of Myanmar and ex-member of Yangon City Development Committee and writer Daw Than Myint Aung serving a jail term of three years under Section 505 (A) have also been released. But, they could not be independently verified.
