Wai Thi Phyo, a female candidate of Amyotha Hluttaw (Upper House) for No.4 Kyainseikkyi Constituency representing the Mon Unity Party (MUP) in 2020 general election, is shot dead at Ywarthit Village near Bayarthonezu, Kyainseikkyi Township, Kayin State on the night of June 8, according to the party officials.

“We don’t know about the incident exactly but she was assassinated around 6:30 pm. She was worried about her safety. She lived in Ywarthit Village about three miles away from Bayarthonezu town. However she slept at Bayarthonezu. We assumed that the assassin is waiting the opportunity to assassinate her,” said Nai Tala Nyi, spokesperson of the MUP.

She was killed by a motorcyclist while she was on her way to Bayarthonezu on her car. She had injuries in her right calf, left chest and left arm and died at Bayarthonezu hospital around 7:20 pm.

“House of her uncle was also hit by gun shots about one month ago and the house was plotted to set fire. However as far as we know, she and her uncle were not related in business,” he said.

She formerly lived in Thanbyuzayat Township and her mother is living in Ywarthit Village. She moved back to her mother’s village after she competed as candidate of the MUP in 2020 general election, he added.

“We assumed that the assassination is related with political issue. It’s because she may not have someone who might have personal grudge against her,” he continued.

“I felt sad to hear about her. It should not be happened. Her uncle’s house was set fire about two weeks ago. She was also threatened and she was not dared to sleep at her house. She was assassinated when she went back to Bayarthonezu. There is no grudge against her and it is quite unbearable as a party member and female politician in related with the assassination plotted by extremists,” said Mi Sandar Nan aka Nyunt Yi, a female candidate of Amyotha Hluttaw (Upper House) for No.1 Kyaikmaraw Constituency representing the Mon Unity Party (MUP) in 2020 general election.

The decease is an attorney.
