Su Su Nway, chairperson of Myanmar Farmer Union, told The Daily Eleven that she would run for 2020 general election in Kawmhu Township, Yangon Region, as an independent candidate.

She said despite offer from some political parties, she was unwilling to compete as a party member.

“I only want to be assigned as my township trusts me. I don’t want to get votes just because I am from such and such a party. This is why I intend to compete as an independent candidate,” she commented.

Su Su Nway said it would be the first time she is going to run for election although she has been a political activist for many years.

As some parliamentary representatives show weaknesses in protecting land rights and human rights in accord with the law, she is planning to compete in the upcoming election.

“If they are able to protect the rights of the people within the framework of law, I, as chairperson of the farmer union, will not compete,” she said.

If elected, she said she would work for famers’ cause as well as regional development, human rights, women’s rights and peace.

Su Su Nway is one of those from the organizations working for labour, farmer and students affairs, who will be running for the election to be held later this year as independent candidates.
