Finding a solution to all problems of Myanmar thorough political means is not wrong, but the failure to solve those problems in a political way has resulted from the weaknesses in decision-making, said Ko Ko Gyi, chairman of People’s Party (PP), at the 2nd meeting of the party’s Central Committee held its headquarters in Yangon yesterday.
“So, our comrades need to try to become a reliable organization among the public. In doing so, we would like to urge the public to cooperate with the political parties because the role of political parties is very important for democracy,” said Ko Ko Gyi.
He also called for protection of the pluralism that they have achieved only after many lives have been lost and prevention of the influence of a single party.
Although there have been battles and arson attacks in the ethnic regions, the ethnic parties didn’t argue against the fact that an ethnic region should have a party representing the ethnic majority, he said.
“Choosing this path was not because I thought it would be easy, but because I am determined to face the challenges and overcome them. We have to protect and defend the pluralism that we have gained after many lives have been lost. We haven’t heard that the ethnic armed groups threatened the ethnic parties for their effort to register and stand. What do you think? No place for our political parties? The State power was seized in 1962 and the military established a political party. Again, the military seized the power in 1988 and then they founded a party. Do we give in? We have to ask about it. Do we need to give up only after we had served our long-term jail sentences?” Ko Ko Gyi said.
He continued to say that according to his review, Myanmar has already faced such a difficult situation as there have been weaknesses in political approach and decisions.
“The political means wasn’t wrong. We believe that if we can find a solution again through political means, all the political problems can be solved. So, our party would like to urge the public to support us with manpower, cash assistance and advice. If you do that, we are going to strive for achieving good results. I also want my comrades to do your best,” Ko Ko Gyi urged.
The central committee meeting will last for two days.
