The Myanmar Press Council (MPC) released a statement on February 13 that the draft for the cybersecurity law is unconstitutional and goes against democratic norms.

It stated that the draft goes against the 2008 constitution, is in conflict with the news media law by hindering democratic freedom of speech as well as news information and as such, should not be implemented. 

It further goes on to state that the people's rights to freely speak online, right to their digital privacy, the most basic of democratic norms and human rights, freedom for the press to report written or broadcast news and more  will be obstructed if the law gets approved. 

The statement says that as per section 2 of the news media law, it is beholden to ensure that news media that that can freely report, the rights and freedoms of journalists as well as the rights of all citizens to information access. 

It also refered to the UN's rule for human rights to express their beliefs and opinions, ultimately deeming that the cybersecurity bill should not be implemented.
