People displaced by conflict and sheltering in eastern Laymyethna Township, Ayeyawady Region, have been forced to move again after being affected by severe flooding, according to local sources.

One person who has experienced both conflict and flooding said the group had fled from Yayphyu in western Laymyethna Township and settled in Laymyethna for safety. However, rising floodwaters have now forced them to relocate once again.

The displaced people had been staying at a nunnery that also accommodates schoolchildren. With only two buildings available and a large number of people, belongings and resident nuns to accommodate, it had become increasingly difficult to remain there. The rising water levels eventually made another move necessary. The person said they were fortunate to have evacuated before conditions worsened.

A 60-year-old man sheltering near Ngawan Bridge in Laymyethna said he and his family were forced to flee in the middle of the night after hearing that a nearby embankment had breached. He said they had little time to escape and could not take any belongings with them, not even extra clothes.

His house was located directly in the path of floodwaters from the breached embankment and has since been destroyed. He is now living with his family in a temporary shelter beside the road.

Flooding and inundation continue to affect Laymyethna Township following the breach of a flood embankment.
