The Ayeyawady River near Pakokku rose to 34 centimetres above its danger level on Tuesday afternoon, prompting more residents in low-lying riverside areas to evacuate as floodwaters continued to inundate homes.

The river, which has reached 2,184 centimetres, has flooded residential areas in Wards 1, 9, 13 and 14, forcing some families to move to temporary shelters.

A local resident said around 50 households from Ward 1 had relocated to the compounds of Kyauk Zedi Pagoda and Phaung Taw Oo Pagoda. Fewer residents have evacuated from Ward 9, with some continuing to monitor the water level while reinforcing entrances to their homes with sandbags.

Residents from Wards 13 and 14 have also moved to shelters at Thiho Shin Pagoda, where local authorities are arranging accommodation and providing food assistance, according to the resident.

The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology forecasts that the river could rise by a further 20 centimetres within the next 24 hours, raising concerns that additional low-lying areas may be affected.
