Chinese President to visit Myanmar on January 17

Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit Myanmar on January 17 at the invitation of President Win Myint, the Chinese embassy in Myanmar cited Ms Hua Chunying, spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry. 

The Chinese President is due to make a two-day visit from January 17 to 18. 

Deputy Minister for Commerce Aung Htoo said that during the visit, a memorandum of understanding on border economic cooperation and MoUs regarding Kyaukphyu Economic Zone would be signed. 

The deputy minister disclosed the information during a meeting with the media in Nay Pyi Taw on January 9. 

"We have two or three (MoUs to sign). The agreements are related to trade, formation of a joint committee at director general level officials, border economic cooperation and Kyaukphyu. Regarding Kyaukphyu, the first framework agreement has already been signed. We have to sign concession agreements. There are two under the framework agreement. I think there are about seven agreements and two of them will be signed," the deputy minister. 

Since the signing of the framework agreement, EIA / SIA works have started. Under the two agreements to be signed soon, there will be other tasks including port activities. And further coordination will be made regarding the industrial zone, he added. 

When asked how much investment there could be, the deputy minister said: "For this we have to calculate in detail. First, the whole project was valued at about US$7 billion. For deep sea port, we have reduced value a little. Now it is expected to be valued at over US$1 billion. Deep sea port work has started, the deputy minister said.
