Some bridges along India-Myanmar Friendship Road need repairs and the Bridge Department will take responsibility to repair them before they get repaired by India.

“We have no contact yet with India to repair the bridges. The first tender selection process was canceled and the tender selection process will be called. At present, the department is repairing them. India will repair them and we will not make major repairs on them,” said Khaing Wai Lin, Chief Engineer of Kalay District.

Authorities built a detour road to repair Nwarswe Bridge in Kalewa Township and trucks and smaller cars have difficulty to go.

“We are repairing the bridge as its joints are loose. The bridge will be closed for three days. Smaller vehicles can go from detour road. Big cars such as six-wheeled, ten-wheeled and twelve-wheeled trucks cannot go from the detour road,” he said.

“Workers are laying decks and the bridge can be used in a short time. They built a detour road for smaller cars and rain damaged it yesterday. Vehicles can use the bridge today evening,” said Aung Phaw from Kalewa.

Bridges on India-Myanmar Friendship Road are iron reinforced bailey bridges.

“Motorcycles and small cars need to be careful on the bridges as the decks are not leveled. The wooden decks are slippery in the rain,” said a local from Kalay.
