Bill on Prevention of Violence Against Women at drafting stage

The Bill on Prevention of Violence Against Women and the Prostitution Bill are being drafted by Myanmar National Committee for Women’s Affairs, according to Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement.

The newly-reformed committee is formed with organizations and associations working for women affairs. The committee’s members help women and young females in solving their difficulties.

One in seven female and children (15 per cent) faces physical, sexual and domestic violence. The 282 in 100,000 females die of violence. The committee is working on the prevention of violence against women, safeguarding and rehabilitation in cooperation with development partner organizations. According to the global figures, one in three children and women (35 per cent) experiences physical, sexual and domestic violence, according to the Demographic Health Survey.

The background facts about the advantages taken by those who commit violence are: discrimination based on diversity, working in remote areas, migration, conflicts and disasters, poor, oppression with the abuse of power, weak rule of law, lack of knowledge about laws and ultra-nationalism, the survey shows.
