At least eight people, including children, have died and others are missing after heavy rains caused landslides in Thandaunggyi Township, Thandaunggyi District, Kayin state, according to locals.

A local said that in addition to the heavy rains that have caused flooding in Thandaunggyi township, landslides caused deaths and some people are reportedly missing.

He continued, “On August 5, there was flooding in a village near the Thauk Yay Khat stream, and three men from Thandaunggyi, who were working on their farm died in the landslide. In addition, one man died in a landslide in Ward No. 3 in Thandaunggyi on August 5.

Similarly, at around 9 pm on August 5, four members of a family, including two children aged four and nine, died after a landslide hit a house in Ward No. 1, he said.

There are also missing people in Thandaunggyi and surrounding areas, where recent rainfall has caused flooding and landslides. In addition, many houses have been damaged, and there are difficulties in road communication to carry out search and rescue operations, and rescue operations are being carried out only with the help of Christian missionary groups and locals, according to locals.

In addition, there is damage to the Taungoo-Thandaunggyi road, and bridges on village roads have been damaged, according to local news reports.

Due to these conditions, urgent assistance is needed, according to locals.
