Artillery shell explosion kills 2, injures 1 in Kawkareik

Two men were killed and one injured when a heavy artillery shell fell onto a house in Ward No.2 of Kawkareik in Kayin State and exploded at about 10 pm on November 20, local sources said.

Two men sleeping in the house located near MyodawU Monastery died instantly and one was wounded, said a local resident.

“Two died, and one sustained a shrapnel wound to the right thigh. They are father and sons,” he added.

The house where the artillery exploded was also damaged and the injured man is being treated at Kawkareik District People’s Hospital, according local sources.

Heavy artillery explosions have frequently occurred in Kawkareik. On November 2 during clashes between the military and the combined forces of KNU, KNLA, and PDF, a shell fell into Saw Mill Street in Ward No.2, injuring two women.

On the afternoon of October 13 also, a student was killed and three were injured by a heavy artillery explosion in front of a high school in Ward No.2, Kawkareik, local sources said.
