The Anti-Corruption Commission will make cooperation with the Myanmar Press Council (MPC) in order to give protection to journalists who want to uncover and report corrupt cases, said Chair of the Anti-Corruption Commission Aung Kyi.

Han Nyunt, a member of the Anti-Corruption Commission read out the message sent by Chair Aung Kyi, to the ceremony to mark the World Press Freedom Day held at the Yangon City Hall on May 3.

In his message, Aung Kyi said: “The Anti-Corruption Commission will make closer cooperation with the Myanmar Press Council (MPC) in order to further develop the media and give protection to the journalists who have desires to expose corrupt cases.

The commission has assumed earnestly that the media plays a very important role making all-out efforts so as to control corruption and promote the good governance system. The media can constantly raise public awareness about corruption. In addition, it can conduct detail studies in corrupt departments and cover the  news.

The media can cover the basic root causes of corrupt cases, court trials and consequences. In addition, they can independently review and criticize the  commission’s strategy, plans and report.

On one hand, the media need to have more rights to information and freedom of expression in order to fully use their effective skills for the fight against corruption. On other hand, the media must be equipped with professionalism and abide by media ethics, the commission believes.
