Explosions occurred at the building where parcels are accepted near the main gate of Insein Prison in Yangon at about 9.40am today killing eight people, according to nearby residents.
Initial reports say that three staff members of the Correctional Department and five civilians died.
Sources close to the prison say that there were two explosions—one inside the building and the other outside the building. Apart from the deaths, at least 10 people were also wounded.
“The incident happened at the building where parcels are accepted (for prisoners). Two bombs exploded. There were both deaths and injuries. Many ambulances were seen entering the prison gate. No visits to the prison are now allowed today. Anyone including lawyers are not allowed to enter. The gate has been closed,” said a resident living near Insein Prison.
The area of the prison main gate has been cordoned off and security forces and police are conducting checks there.
NOM news agency reported that one explosion occurred inside the building and another explosion outside it. Three privates from the prison were killed by the explosions.
Moreover, five civilians who were visiting the prison to meet inmates or give parcels also died. So far, the number of the dead and the wounded has reached 11, the news agency reported.
