16.7 percent of adult population in Myanmar vaccinated with at least one dose of Covid-19 vaccine

YANGON-16.7 percent of the adult population of Myanmar or 6.159 of the 36.9 Million adult population of Myanmar have received at least one dose of Covid-19 vaccine, according to the Ministry of Health.

The Ministry added that it plans to vaccinate 20 percent of the adult population by end of September, 50 percent of the adult population by the end of 2021, and 70 percent of the adult population by mid-2021. Adult population includes any persons who is 18 or older.

According to MOH, as of September 21st, 3.587 Million adults have received two doses of the Covid-19 vaccines while 2.575 Million adults are partially vaccinated with one dose. A total of 9.742 Million doses have been administered in Myanmar. 

A total of 14.2 Million doses of Covid-19 vaccines from manufacturers such as Sinopharm, Sinovac, and Covidshield have arrived in Myanmar as of September 24th. 

Myanmar’s MOH has recently signed an agreement with China to purchase 24 Million doses of Sinopharm vaccine. 

Myanmar launched its Covid-19 vaccination program in January, but vaccination efforts slowed down in the first part of 2021 due to the Feb 1st military takeover. Additionally, although 3.7 million doses of Covidshield arrived from India, Myanmar’s vaccination efforts slowed down as India barred vaccine exports after its own deadly third wave of Covid-19. 

Since the military takeover, Myanmar has become increasingly reliant on Chinese vaccines in its Covid-19 vaccination efforts. 

Myanmar has recorded total of 453,407 cases of Covid-19 and a total of 17,343 Covid-related deaths.
