A doctor well-known for providing pro-bono medical treatments to political prisoners from Insein Prison was killed in his clinic according to North District Police Force.

Dr. Tun Lwin, 71 years old, has opened a clinic called “Lin” at Thayat Chan -1 ward in Insein Township. According to results of preliminary investigation by the Police, a 30 year old male living in the same neighborhood stole a knife from a Barbecue shop in front of the clinic and entered the clinic. While the doctor was examining a patient, he slashed the doctor at the throat.

With the wound inflicted on his neck, Dr. Tun Lwin was en route to Insein hospital but lost his life on his way to the hospital, according to a policeman from North District Police Force.

The man who killed the doctor was arrested within hours.

According to residents, the man was a notorious troublemaker living in that ward.

Dr. Tun Lwin has been operating out of his clinic in that ward for more than 15 years and is loved and well-respected by those in the neighbouring area. He is also a prison doctor at Insein Prison from 1989 till now and known for giving treatment to political prisoners.

According to a certain Thandar Win’s post on Facebook, “The killer have been involved with the clinic before when he entered the clinic drunk and slapped the female nurse working there. He was sentenced to 2 months in prison. Last year, his 90 years old grandmother was treated at the clinic for 3 days and passed away naturally. But he had problems with his grandmother’s death and was not happy with the doctor. He was a drunkard, drives a funeral vehicle and is a divorced man. Yesterday, he came to the clinic and asked for IV injection and the doctor even treated him. People from the neighborhood warned the doctor about him but the doctor was somewhat careless. When there were fewer patients at the clinic on October 4, an accomplice signaled him and he entered the clinic. He took a knife from Barbecue shop in front of the clinic and slashed the doctor’s neck while he was treating a patient. The doctor was still conscious so he managed to beat the man back once. The killer left the way he came, everyone else was too stunned to react and the nurse was in other room. After the killer ran, people shouted and called the police. They managed to put cottons to stem the heavy bleeding and the doctor managed to barely walk to another clinic nearby. The female doctor there instructed going to the hospital as quickly as possible. He died on the way there. The police searched for the murderer and arrested him at Insein jetty. He was a good man known for given free of charge medical treatments to political prisoners.”

The man was taken action in accordance with Penal Code Section 302 for manslaughter.
