Myanmar’s Ministry of Commerce has said it will not issue online sales registration certificates for gold and gold-containing products, citing concerns that online trading could contribute to volatility in gold prices and the market.
The ministry said the restriction covers gold, raw gold, gold jewellery, and artworks and household items made from gold or raw gold.
However, online sales registration certificates may be issued for gemstones sold separately from gold products. Applicants must hold a trading licence from the Myanmar Gems Enterprise under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation and provide an undertaking that they will not sell gold or gold products.
The Ministry of Commerce began issuing registrations for online businesses in October 2023.
