The SKY MAN steel mill in the Myaungtaka Industrial Zone has been penalized for illegally stealing electricity and will be required to repay K17.184 billion in losses incurred by the state, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Electricity and Energy.
The ministry had previously urged electricity consumers who had illegally obtained and used electricity through fraudulent methods to report themselves to the relevant departments by July 31, 2026. It said those who voluntarily reported such violations would be given leniency. However, after the deadline, if illegal electricity use was detected by Control Centers, offenders would face penalties under the Electricity Law, including fines, temporary suspension or cancellation of electricity meter usage rights, and closure of business licenses.
The ministry said leniency measures had already been granted to all those who came forward and reported their illegal electricity use.
During August 2026, inspection teams formed by the ministry detected a total of 95 people illegally obtaining and using electricity: seven in Nay Pyi Taw Union Territory, 12 in Yangon Region, 21 in Mandalay Region, 17 in Magway Region, 32 in Ayeyarwady Region, one in Kachin State, two in Mon State and three in southern Shan State.
The ministry said effective action was being taken against the offenders in accordance with established procedures, including removing their electricity meters, demanding full compensation for the losses, and filing criminal cases against some of them under the law.
In addition, the Ministry of Electricity and Energy has been monitoring electricity consumption through Control Centers. On September 3, an alarm was detected on electricity meter No. YN-17431 at the SKY MAN steel mill, located at Plot No. (32/37) in the Myaungtaka Industrial Zone, Hmawbi Township.
A team comprising responsible officials conducted an on-site inspection and removed the meter for examination by the Test Lab Department. The inspection found that the meter had been tampered with and that electricity had been illegally stolen.
The factory was immediately shut down, and authorities are taking steps to recover K17.184 billion in compensation for 23.36 million units of electricity lost by the state. Action is also being taken to file a case against the company at Hmawbi Myoma Police Station in accordance with the Electricity Law.
