A woman who returned from Yangon and lives in Kyaikkhami town, Thanbyuzayat Township, Mon State, has tested positive for severe diarrheal disease, while nine family members who had contact with her have been placed under quarantine.

The woman, Daw Htay Mon, lives on Shwe Kyin Kyaung Street in Yan Aung Myin Ward, Kyaikkhami. She returned to Kyaikkhami on August 9 with her niece, Daw Ei Ei Phyo, from Thayettaw Monastery on Bogyoke Street in Lanmadaw Township, Yangon Region, according to a source close to the Township Health Department.

Daw Htay Mon was admitted to Kyaikkhami District Hospital at around 7:30 pm on August 13 after experiencing frequent diarrhea. A cholera rapid diagnostic test conducted at the hospital returned positive, indicating severe diarrheal disease, the source said.

She is currently receiving treatment at Kyaikkhami District Hospital and is recovering, with only mild diarrhea remaining.

Meanwhile, nine family members who had contact with her—two men and seven women—have been placed under quarantine at Kyaikkhami District Hospital and are being closely monitored.

Since August 9, cases of severe diarrhea have been reported in several townships in Yangon Region. As of August 13, more than 180 patients had been admitted to Yangon General Hospital, including a 92-year-old patient who died and 54 patients diagnosed with severe diarrheal disease.

Relevant departments are currently conducting food and water quality tests in Lanmadaw, Latha, Pabedan and Kyauktada townships in coordination with other authorities. Street food vendors in the affected areas have also been ordered to suspend operations since August 13.

Earlier, on April 30, 2026, diarrhea cases were reported among fishermen and their family members in Kyaikkhami.
