Flood relief camps in Yekyi Township, which is adjacent to Laymyethna Township, are in need of donations and assistance in particular in relief camps in villages, according to sources.

A flood evacuee sheltering at Kyokeone School in Yekyi Township said, “We are facing difficulties with food. There are many children and elderly people at our relief camp, and we also need healthcare assistance. Very few donors have been able to reach us. In areas where the water has entered, some houses are already half-submerged, while in others the water has reached the eaves. This area is slightly elevated, so people have gathered here. We are facing considerable hardship.”

A flood-affected resident from Hlaytorone Village in Yekyi Township said, “The bridge has been submerged, and the houses have also been flooded. We are struggling because we are daily wage earners and are having difficulties making a living and getting food. Elderly people aged over 75 or 80 have difficulty going to the toilet, so some have been moved to higher houses and are taken back when meals are delivered. Everyone has gathered at Hlaytorone Pagoda. Very few donors have been able to reach us. When there are donors, we have to go and collect the supplies from the opposite bank. Since donors cannot come all the way here, we have to cross to this side by raft, then transport the donations back by raft and distribute them on the other bank.”

An official from the Hinthada District Social Assistance Network said, “Most of the aid is going into Laymyethna Township, while very little is reaching nearby Yekyi Township. It is clear that villages are in greater need of assistance. People in the town have relatively better access to aid. We are systematically working to ensure that donations from donors reach the places where they are most needed. We are coordinating with partner organizations in Yekyi and Kyonpyaw, carefully studying household and family lists, and distributing donations accordingly. Yesterday, our vehicle suffered a punctured tire on the way back after making a donation. Despite the difficulties and shortages, we are doing our best with the resources available to provide assistance. We also hope other donors will be aware of the situation and provide support to areas in need.”

It is also reported that river water entering through the dam breach in Laymyethna Township has now reached Yekyi Township, causing flooding in cultivated farmland and residential houses in affected areas.
