An International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) representative visited and held a private meeting with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi on Monday, according to an ICRC statement.

The ICRC said the visit was conducted in line with its standard procedures for visiting people deprived of their liberty, allowing its representative to speak privately with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

The organisation said its prison visits also include facilitating the exchange of family news where possible. In accordance with its long-standing practice, any observations and recommendations made during such visits are shared confidentially only with the relevant prison authorities and responsible officials, and are not made public.

The ICRC added that it continues to engage with the relevant authorities to maintain and expand access to places of detention across Myanmar.

Since 2021, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has been convicted under multiple laws, including anti-corruption, natural disaster management, import and export, telecommunications, and state security legislation. She received lengthy prison sentences, although some of those sentences were later reduced through pardons.

The visit comes as the international community, ASEAN and domestic political groups continue to call for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s release as part of national reconciliation efforts. It also follows a request by ASEAN’s Special Envoy on Myanmar and Philippine Foreign Secretary, Maria Theresa P. Lazaro, to meet her separately. The announcement of the ICRC representative’s visit was released by the Presidential Office’s News and Information Bureau.

On 30 April, Myanmar’s President ordered that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi serve the remainder of her sentence at a designated residence under Section 401(1) of the Code of Criminal Procedure on humanitarian grounds and in commemoration of the Kasone Full Moon Day.
