Reports have emerged that an embankment near Laymyethna in Ayeyawady Region has breached, prompting some local residents to move to safer areas.

According to a resident of Laymyethna, the reported breach occurred between Myitkywa and Ma Thae Kone, about 1.5 miles from the town and near Kyun Tan, Myitkywa and Ward No. 5.

“People heard this evening that the embankment had breached despite efforts by officials to protect the weak section. Residents are moving to safer places,” the resident said.

A member of a local social assistance organization said firefighters from Hinthada had also joined efforts to protect the embankment.

“We heard reports that the embankment had breached, so some people have evacuated to safer areas. Officials are carrying out emergency protection measures. However, we cannot confirm whether it has actually breached because we are no longer at the site,” the official said.

Video footage posted on social media by some Laymyethna residents reportedly shows water flowing through the embankment.

As of around midnight, local elders and community leaders had reportedly confirmed that the embankment had been breached, while calls were being made on social media for residents to evacuate to safer locations.

However, a nighttime statement issued by the Ayeyawady Region Fire Services Department described the situation somewhat differently. It reported that a section of the embankment at Mile 25/3 in Myitkywa Village, Thakhauk Chaung Village Tract, Laymyethna Township, had developed a 30-foot-long and approximately five-foot-high subsidence or erosion section.

Search and rescue personnel, working together with relevant organizations, were reportedly carrying out emergency response measures. Efforts continued overnight to prevent further deterioration, including driving stakes into the embankment, placing rocks, filling the affected area with sand and soil, stacking sandbags, and reinforcing sections where the embankment had weakened or slumped.

As of the latest available information, the Ayeyawady Region Government had not issued an official statement confirming that the embankment had completely breached.
