Heavy overnight rainfall caused flooding in several townships across Yangon, forcing some residents to evacuate as water entered homes.

Rain began late on July 28 and continued through the morning of July 29, the Full Moon Day of Waso. Residents in affected areas, including Insein, Shwepyitha, North Dagon, East Dagon, Mayangone, South Okkalapa and Thamine Junction, reported widespread flooding.

An Insein resident said floodwaters rose steadily overnight, submerging beds by around 2 a.m. Water levels began receding later in the day after the rain stopped, while volunteers distributed food to affected families.

In Shwepyitha Township, local charity groups carried out rescue operations in Inn Pauk Su Village, Ward 24, where flooding affected homes.

The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology forecast more heavy rain in Yangon and several other regions and states through July 29, warning of strong winds, thunderstorms, lightning and possible hail. The department urged the public to remain alert to severe weather conditions.
