Myanmar’s Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH) has announced that El Niño conditions, which are associated with abnormal rainfall patterns and irregular storm activity, are expected to strengthen during August 2026.

According to the department, sea surface temperatures and atmospheric conditions over the tropical Pacific Ocean near the equator are currently at a moderate El Niño level. Based on forecast models produced by international meteorological agencies, El Niño is expected to intensify into a strong phase during August 2026 and could reach a very strong phase by the end of 2026.

Although El Niño originates in the Pacific Ocean, its impacts are felt globally. The phenomenon is generally associated with abnormal rainfall patterns, irregular storm formation, higher daytime temperatures during upcoming summer seasons, drought conditions, and other extreme weather events.

The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology advised relevant sectors to make advance preparations for potential impacts and stated that it will continue to issue timely updates and information regarding the development of El Niño conditions.
