Modern smart meters that enable consumers to read their own meter usage and pay electricity bills independently are currently being manufactured in Myanmar, according to reports.

As part of ongoing efforts by the Ministry of Electric Power and Energy to increase electricity availability nationwide, reduce power losses, and ensure a stable and continuous power supply, Union Minister U Ko Ko Lwin visited a factory producing modern smart meters in the Intagaw Industrial Zone, Bago Region, on the morning of July 20 to inspect the production of digital meters.

During the inspection, the Union Minister emphasized the need to conduct research and development activities to upgrade both hardware and software systems. He also called for the production of digital meters for natural gas and water consumption, the continuous training and development of electronic and IT professionals, and the timely manufacture and supply of digital meters required by the country.

Following the factory visit, the minister met with departmental officials, district- and township-level electricity managers, township electrical engineers, and township finance officers at the headquarters of the Yangon Electricity Supply Corporation (YESC). During the meeting, he stated that technology would be utilized to strengthen monitoring and inspections to prevent electricity losses. He also urged officials to provide better services to meet the needs of electricity consumers and instructed call centers to respond patiently and effectively to public inquiries and reports.

Afterward, the Chairman of the Yangon Electricity Supply Corporation presented plans aimed at further improving electricity distribution across Yangon Region. It was reported that the minister reviewed the proposals and provided the necessary support for their implementation.
