Police have opened a murder case in Hinthada against a Myanmar national arrested after allegedly fleeing from Thailand, where he is suspected of killing his wife and concealing her body.

According to police, the suspect is currently under investigation and has been charged at Hinthada Police Station under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

"Following the arrest, the case was reported to the relevant authorities. Although the alleged offence was committed abroad, Myanmar law allows legal action to be taken domestically where appropriate. Based on the instructions received, a case has been opened at Hinthada Police Station under Section 302 of the Penal Code, and legal proceedings are continuing," a police official said.

Asked about the initial findings of the investigation, the official said authorities are verifying all facts surrounding the case. "The suspect has also confessed during questioning. He admitted to killing his wife," the official said.

The 36-year-old suspect was arrested at his home in Hinthada Township on the morning of June 13 in connection with the case.

The investigation stems from the discovery by Thai police of the dismembered body of a 34-year-old Myanmar woman inside a plastic container at a house on Ratchathewi Road in Bangkok's Din Daeng District. Thai authorities initially identified the suspect as Aung Pe, a 36-year-old Myanmar national, and issued arrest warrant No. 3342/2569 while coordinating with immigration authorities to locate him.

A police officer said the investigation in Myanmar began after information about the case was shared on June 12, 2026, through the Facebook page Hinthada Myo Sone Si Ya by an account named Ko Aent Gyi.

On the morning of June 13, a joint team comprising the officer in charge of Hinthada Police Station, police personnel and the administrator of Myawady Ward searched Aung Pe's residence on Thida Road in Myawady Ward, Hinthada Township. The suspect, who had reportedly been working as a chef at a pub in Thailand, was taken into custody and brought to the police station for further questioning, police said.
