Myanmar and Indonesian Foreign Ministers Hold Talks in Nay Pyi Taw

The foreign ministers of Myanmar and Indonesia held talks in Naypyidaw on June 8, according to reports.

At the invitation of Myanmar’s Union Minister for Foreign Affairs U Tin Maung Swe, Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono, accompanied by his wife and a delegation, paid an official visit to Naypyidaw on June 8, 2026.

During the afternoon of June 8, the Myanmar Foreign Minister received and held discussions with the Indonesian Foreign Minister and his delegation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During the meeting, the two foreign ministers discussed strengthening the long-standing traditional friendship between Myanmar and Indonesia, enhancing cooperation to open a new chapter in bilateral relations, including diplomatic ties, expanding cooperation within ASEAN as well as at regional and international levels, promoting economic collaboration, and increasing cooperation in areas of mutual benefit to both countries.

The Myanmar Foreign Minister expressed appreciation for Indonesia’s positive recognition of developments in Myanmar’s peace process and political progress. He stated that cooperation between the foreign ministries of the two countries would be further strengthened and emphasized that Myanmar continues to participate as a responsible member of ASEAN while pursuing a Myanmar-led and Myanmar-owned process suited to the country’s circumstances.

He also thanked Indonesia and other ASEAN member states for their understanding and support of Myanmar’s positive developments and requested continued assistance for Myanmar’s human resource development, including the provision of scholarships by Indonesia.

For his part, the Indonesian Foreign Minister said Indonesia would continue to strengthen its existing relations with Myanmar. He noted that Indonesia recognizes Myanmar’s efforts toward peace, national reconciliation, and democratic development alongside the emergence of a new government through elections. He also stated that Indonesia acknowledges Myanmar’s implementation of the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus through a Myanmar-led and Myanmar-owned process.

The Indonesian Foreign Minister further remarked that Myanmar has been a member of the ASEAN family for many years and expressed Indonesia’s desire to see Myanmar continue participating in ASEAN activities.

He added that Indonesia understands the challenges faced by a multi-ethnic society such as Myanmar and wishes to contribute to Myanmar’s peace process. He also expressed interest in expanding cooperation in the fields of economic development, education, healthcare, people-to-people exchanges, and humanitarian assistance.
