Four Myanmar migrant workers were arrested by Thai authorities before they could cross the border after allegedly killing their employer over unpaid wages, according to a report by Thaiger.
The four were apprehended on May 2 in Mae Rim District, Chiang Mai, just before attempting to flee across the border. They were arrested at around 1 a.m., and the report stated that the victim had been stabbed to death.
Police in Chiang Rai said the suspects were detained near Wat Rong Khun in the early morning while preparing to escape across the border. They were later handed over to Mae Rim Police Station for legal action.
The killing reportedly took place at around 2 a.m. on May 1. The victim, identified as 49-year-old Suamchai, was a Shan ethnic man who had been living in the same workshop as the four suspects, police said.
According to the report, the workers confessed that they had planned the murder because their wages had not been paid.
Police stated that two of the workers stabbed Suamchai in the neck while he was asleep, while the other two acted as lookouts. After the killing, all four suspects fled the scene.
CCTV footage showed the suspects leaving the area before heading toward Chiang Rai. They were arrested before they could cross back into Myanmar, the report added.
