Myanmar’s Central Bank Governor, Dr. Khin Naing Oo, said the Thai baht can be used not only in the trade sector but also for investment activities in Myanmar.

He made the remarks on April 28 during a meeting at the Central Bank of Myanmar in Nay Pyi Taw with Mr. Yordying Supasri, Chargé d’Affaires of the Thai Embassy, and his delegation.

During the discussion, the Thai representative expressed appreciation for the Central Bank’s support to Thailand’s private sector in trade and financial matters, particularly regarding foreign exchange rates. He also welcomed Myanmar’s gradual relaxation of policies requiring export earnings to be converted into kyats. Thai businesses, he said, are interested in expanding investments in Myanmar using Thai baht and increasing cooperation in both trade and investment sectors. He added that technical assistance would be provided if needed.

In response, the Central Bank Governor said the bank is working to ensure monetary stability, stabilize exchange rates, reduce inflation, strengthen payment and settlement systems, and maintain a stable banking sector. He confirmed that the use of Thai baht in Myanmar is permitted not only for trade but also for investment. He also discussed cooperation with Thai banks in financial, trade, banking, and technical matters.

Deputy governors and senior officials from the Central Bank of Myanmar also attended the meeting.
