More than 254,100 homes across Myanmar have been damaged by strong winds over the past 11 years, with the 2016–2017 fiscal year recording the highest number of damaged houses, according to available data.

Across Myanmar, during the late spring and summer seasons, daytime temperatures gradually rise, leading to the formation of convective clouds. These can develop into thunderclouds in the afternoon and evening, bringing various weather phenomena along their paths, including strong winds, thunder, lightning, hail, and scattered thunderstorms. The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology has been issuing real-time weather warnings and updates related to these conditions.

During the past 11 years, strong winds have damaged more than 254,100 homes nationwide, with the 2016–2017 fiscal year recording the highest level of housing damage. The incidents also resulted in casualties and injuries, reports indicate.

The Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement has prioritized reinforcing and repairing structurally weak homes that are vulnerable to roof damage or collapse during strong winds. These efforts aim to make houses more resilient to wind damage and are carried out with the cooperation of local administrative bodies, social organizations, and local communities.

From the 2016–2017 fiscal year to the 2024–2025 fiscal year, over an eight-year period, more than 86,000 homes have received technical support and improvements to strengthen their resistance to strong winds.

Each year, from the end of the cool season through the pre-monsoon period, authorities also carry out preparedness measures and public awareness campaigns to help households reinforce their homes and reduce risks associated with strong winds.
