The handover ceremony of the solar streetlights donated by the Yunnan Provincial Government to Thaketa Township, Yangon Region, was held at the U Energy Factory on Ayar Wun Road in Thaketa Township on January 26.

The ceremony was attended by Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Myanmar Ms. Ma Jia, Chairman U Bo Htay of the Yangon City Development Committee, Minister for Economic Affairs of the Yangon Region Government U Myo Myint Aung, CEO of the Yangon Electricity Supply Corporation U Kyaw Thu, and officials from the U Energy Factory.

By 2024, Yunnan Province has implemented 187 public welfare projects in 24 countries under the “Seitchinsetnwe Yunnan Program” starting in 2022, targeting 13 countries in South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Indian Ocean.

Among these projects, 45 projects in Myanmar have been implemented in various sectors, including infrastructure, clean energy, clean drinking water, environmental protection, education support vocational training and disaster response, and of which, 7 projects were submitted and implemented by the Yunnan Provincial Trade and Industry Representative Office in Myanmar, with a total value of about 2 million yuan, benefiting local people.

The Solar Street Light Phase 2 Project in Thaketa Township is an extension of the Phase 1 Project and 40 sets of solar street lights will be installed on the roads in Thaketa Township, including many public places in Thaketa Township, with a total cost of more than 370,000 yuan.

The project is jointly implemented by the Yunnan Provincial Trade and Industry Representative Office in Myanmar and Yunnan Energy Group (YEG). YEG has been operating the main power supply business in Yangon for many years, and the average daily power generation has been able to meet the electricity needs of 300,000 households.

“In the Thaketa Township solar street light project, we used the government funding and business partnership model. The Yunnan Provincial Trade and Industry Representative Office based in Myanmar and U Energy Thaketa Power Co. Ltd of Yunnan Energy Group jointly implemented the project. The second phase of the project was handed over to officials from Thaketa Township on December 24, 2025. The 40 sets of solar street lights installed in the second phase will cover crowded and busy markets, parks, gas stations and office buildings. Combined with the first phase, it will directly and indirectly benefit about 400 households and 2,000 people. We will continue the third phase in this year and expand it to cover the main roads in ten northern wards of Thaketa Township. In addition, starting from 2026, we will listen to the needs of the local people and expand other social welfare projects in addition to solar street lights,” said Mr. Guangwei, head of the Yunnan Provincial Trade and Industry Representative Office based in Myanmar.
