Thai authorities conducted inspections and arrests in Mae Sot, a border town opposite Myawaddy where many Myanmar nationals live and work, targeting illegal residents and legally residing foreigners engaged in unauthorized employment on January 16, according to local sources.

The operation followed an altercation involving some Myanmar migrant workers and Thai nationals in the Mae Sot Myanmar market area. After the incident, officials intensified checks on Myanmar migrant workers operating in the area.

Authorities stated that Myanmar migrant workers are not permitted to engage in certain businesses, including gold trading, goldsmith work, beauty services, and market vending. As part of efforts to protect Thai nationals’ economic interests, officials arrested vendors who were selling goods without proper work authorization, even if they possessed valid residency documents.

The inspections and arrests were carried out jointly by Tak District immigration officials and the Thai police.

Although one has evidence but are moving to another location and do not report to the relevant authorities within 24 hours, he/she will be arrested, prosecuted, and deported, it is reported. Some Thais have been injured in the clashes that have occurred in Thailand, and the Myanmar workers who committed the attacks have also pleaded guilty and been released.

However, due to the unwanted consequences of the clashes, Myanmar workers in Mae Sot need to follow the rules and be especially careful, and live like guests, said a person who lives in Mae Sot and works in labor affairs.
