Major General Zaw Min Tun, the spokesperson of Myanmar's State Administration Council (SAC), said the country will prioritize diplomatic relations with nations that can bring practical benefits to the social and economic welfare of its people.

He made this remark on June 29 after returning from the 4th Europe-Asia Economic Forum (EEF 2025), held in Minsk, Belarus. Responding to media questions, he emphasized that Myanmar’s foreign policy is independent and neutral, treating all countries as friends. However, he noted that Myanmar will give priority to relationships that can offer concrete advantages for national development and public welfare.

Zaw Min Tun highlighted that the trip opened new opportunities to boost Myanmar’s economic and social growth. He also recalled Myanmar’s growing engagement with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) since 2022, leading to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in 2023 during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. The cooperation continued in 2024, with follow-up meetings held both in Nay Pyi Taw and Russia.

He said EAEU emphasizes national sovereignty and mutual benefit in its agreements, aligning with Myanmar’s own goals. At a time when some global powers impose unfair restrictions, he believes deeper ties with EAEU can strengthen Myanmar’s international standing.

As part of the forum, Myanmar expressed interest in becoming an observer state in the EAEU. According to Zaw Min Tun, member countries like Russia have shown positive responses to Myanmar’s efforts.

During the trip, he also visited Ulan-Ude in Russia’s Buryatia Republic, where discussions covered cultural ties, Buddhist cooperation, helicopter transport, and future railway collaboration. He noted Buryatia’s Buddhist heritage and the strong religious connections already established with Myanmar, including plans to organize a Buddhist forum and further religious exchanges.

He concluded by saying the visit helped identify multiple areas for collaboration that could enhance transportation, tourism, and sectoral partnerships between Myanmar and EAEU countries.
