Myanmar pardons 513 prisoners and detainees in Mon State on Myanmar New Year Day

A total of 513 prisoners and detainees were released from prisons, detention centers, and labour camps in Mon State on April 17, the first day of the Myanmar New Year.

The number of prisoners released from the prisons, detention centers, and labour camps are as per following: 63 male prisoners and 34 female prisoners from Kyaikmaraw Central Prison in Kyaikmaraw Township, 133 male prisoners and 77 female prisoners from Mawlamyine Prison, 43 male prisoners Zay Ma Thwe Prison in Thaton Township, 30 male prisoners from Taung Son Labour Camp in Bilin Township, 13 male prisoners from Ingabo Rubber Plantation Camp in Kyaikmaraw Township, 46 male prisoners from Mopalin (Male) Labour Camp, 51 female prisoners from Mopalin (Female) Labour Camp, 4 male prisoners from Zin Kyaik Labour Camp in Paung Township, 10 male prisoners from Yin Nyein Labour Camp and 9 male prisoners from Inn Byung Labour Camp, totaling 351 male prisoners and 162 female prisoners.

A total of 86 Bengali men and 39 women, of whom were imprisoned in Mawlamyine Detention Center, were re-arrested by the order of Department of Immigration, according to a source close to the State Correctional Department.

The Chairman of the State Administration Council, in commemoration of the Myanmar New Year, in order to appease the hearts and minds of the people and to show them the love and goodwill of the State, has ordered that all prisoners who are serving sentences in prisons, detention centres and camps before April 17, 2025 except for prisoners, who have committed serious crimes such as murder, rape, and explosives, convicted offences under the Unlawful Associations Act, offences under Section 19 (f) of the 1878 Arms Act, offences under the 1949 Arms (Emergency Punishment) (Temporary) Act, offences under the 1951 Arms (Temporary Amendment) Act, offences under the 1924 Shan State Arms Ordinance, offences under the 2023 Arms Act, prisoners/persons who have been convicted of any offence under any existing law, other than offences under the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Law, offences under the Natural Disaster Management Law, offences under the Anti-Terrorism Law and offences under the Anti-Corruption Law, and, are hereby granted remission of one-sixth of their remaining sentences under Section 401, Sub-section (1) of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Accordingly, pursuant to Order No. 30/2025, Section 401 (1), 4,893 prisoners have been granted remission of their remaining sentences under the condition that “if they commit another offence, they shall continue to serve the remaining sentences in addition to the current sentence.”

In addition, 13 foreign prisoners have also been granted amnesty by reducing the remaining sentences they have to serve.

On April 17, 2024, a total of 204 prisoners and detainees from prisons, detention centers, and labour camps in Mon State were released through amnesty.
