
The devastating earthquake that struck Myanmar has claimed 3,649 lives, left 5,018 injured, and 145 people are still reported missing, as of 6:00 pm on April 9, according to Major General Zaw Min Tun, spokesperson for the State Administration Council.
The earthquake, which measured 7.7 on the Richter scale, struck at 12:51 pm. local time on March 28, approximately 20 kilometers northeast of Mandalay. It caused widespread destruction across multiple regions, including Sagaing, Mandalay, Magway, northeastern Shan State, the Nay Pyi Taw Council Area, and Bago Region.
“The government deeply mourns the loss of life and the suffering of those injured and missing,” said Maj. Gen. Zaw Min Tun. “As of today, 106 aircraft carrying aid from 22 countries has landed in Myanmar. We have received 1,738 rescue personnel, over 1,472 tons of emergency supplies, and more than 1,100 tons of relief goods.”
Countries contributing to the international humanitarian response include Russia, China, Hong Kong, India, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Vietnam, the UAE, Laos, Belarus, Indonesia, Bhutan, the Philippines, Japan, Nepal, Pakistan, Turkey, the United States, Sri Lanka, Australia, and Azerbaijan.
Relief efforts are ongoing, with both domestic authorities and international teams working around the clock to provide medical assistance, search and rescue operations, and essential supplies to the hardest-hit areas.
