88 dead and 36 rescued in earthquake-hit Sagaing Town

The Fire Services Department has reported that 88 bodies have been recovered and 36 people rescued in Sagaing Town following a devastating earthquake. The casualties and survivors were found across multiple locations in the city.  

In Parami Ward, the quake affected a school for the blind, a nunnery, and several residential homes. Nearby, the New Embrace KTV and Po Tan Ward's education college and Basic Education High School (1) also suffered damage. The Swe Taw Nan Guest House and Toe Tat Wei Computer Shop were among other impacted structures.  

Further rescues took place in Chin Su Ward at the Myat Private School, while Min Street Ward saw damage to the Myoma Mosque, Moe Kya Mosque, Hmaway Kyu  old drink shop, and a tailoring shop. In Sein Kone Ward, the Lay Kyun Mya Brick Monastery and a grocery store were affected.  

The Moe Zay Ward's District Information and Public Relations Office and Zeyyar Kwet Thit Ward's Ingyin Pin Monastery also reported casualties. The Ta Kaung Ward's Nay La wheat mill and tobacco warehouse, along with Myo Thit Ward's nunnery, Thakya Mita monastery and several other monasteries were additional sites of rescue operations.  

Since the disaster began, rescue teams have worked tirelessly. As of the morning of March 30, 36 survivors have been successfully pulled from the rubble, while 88 victims have been confirmed dead.  

The Myanmar Fire Services Department has confirmed that search and rescue operations remain ongoing as teams continue to comb through affected areas.
