As part of a trilateral effort between Myanmar, China, and Thailand to combat online fraud and gambling, Myanmar deported 365 Chinese nationals involved in these activities on March 27. The deportation was conducted in accordance with legal procedures and humanitarian considerations through the Myanmar-Thailand No. 2 Friendship Bridge.
Karen State’s Minister of Social Affairs, U Saw Htun Aung, along with officials, oversaw the deportation process. Authorities ensured accuracy in statistical records and coordinated efforts related to the deportees' living conditions, food, health, and security. The deportation ceremony was attended by representatives from Myanmar, China, and Thailand, including Deputy Director General Mr Liu Ning Ning from China’s Ministry of Public Security’s Criminal Investigation Department and representatives from Thailand’s Tak Province Immigration Bureau. Myanmar officials systematically handed over deportation-related documents to their respective counterparts.
Between January 30 and March 27, Myanmar identified and detained 8,670 foreign nationals who had entered the country illegally. Of these, 6,163 have been repatriated through Thailand following legal procedures, while 2,507 remain in custody, awaiting transfer.
The detained individuals hail from various countries, including China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Pakistan, India, Uganda, Ethiopia, Nepal, Thailand, Rwanda, Kenya, Kazakhstan, Cambodia, Ghana, Bangladesh, Japan, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Tunisia, Algeria, Congo, Cameroon, Uzbekistan, Nigeria, Kyrgyzstan, Namibia, Madagascar, Romania, Russia, the Philippines, and Taiwan, with Chinese nationals forming the majority.
