"By 6 p.m. today (April 8), the total death toll from the earthquake has reached 3,645, with 5,017 injured and 148 still missing. On behalf of the government, we express our deepest condolences to the affected families. So far, international assistance has arrived from 20 countries, including 98 flights, six vehicle shipments, and five shipments by sea. A total of 1,738 rescue personnel have been deployed, delivering over 1,304 metric tons of relief supplies and more than 910 metric tons of rescue equipment," said Major General Zaw Min Tun.
Countries providing rescue teams and aid include Russia, China, China (Hong Kong), India, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Vietnam, UAE, Laos, Belarus, Indonesia, Bhutan, the Philippines, Japan, Nepal, Pakistan, Turkey, the U.S., Sri Lanka, and Hong Kong—totaling 20 nations.
The powerful earthquake, measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale, struck at 12:51:02 p.m. local time on March 28, about 20 kilometers northeast of Mandalay. The disaster caused extensive damage and losses in Sagaing Region, Mandalay Region, Magway Region, northeastern Shan State, Nay Pyi Taw Council Territory, and Bago Region.
