The Independent reports that Lady Elish Angiolini, Principal of St Hugh's College, Oxford University, where Daw Aung San Suu Kyi studied, has called for her release.

The Principal of St Hugh's College has written a letter to the Myanmar military government demanding her release, the report said.

Ms. Angiolini also backed calls by former British foreign secretaries William Hague, Sir Malcolm Rifkind and Jack Straw for her release.

The 79-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner has been embroiled in an international row over her reputation after refusing to take sides with the Rohingya over violence against the minority group.

The fall of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was documented in a documentary by the Independent titled "Cancelled: The rise and fall of Aung San Suu Kyi".

In the documentary, Mr. William Hague said that while the incident may have been a setback for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the movement must continue to work for her release.

Mrs. Angiolini, the Principal of St. Hugh's College, agreed with Mr. Hague's comments and has written a letter to the Myanmar government calling for her release, a spokesman for Mrs. Angiolini said.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was an undergraduate at St. Hugh's College and is an honorary fellow.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi celebrated her 67th birthday at St. Hugh's College, where she studied politics, philosophy and economics in the mid-1960s.

However, after international criticism of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's stance on Myanmar's humanitarian crisis, St. Hugh's College removed a portrait of her from display at the college in 2017 and placed it in a store-room.
