Government announces extended holidays with substitute workdays for 2024-2025
Published 23 December 2024

The Myanmar government has announced that public holidays and government office holidays falling between working days will be combined into continuous holidays. To make up for the working days missed, specific Saturdays have been designated as substitute workdays.

This decision aims to facilitate travel and allow the public and government employees to enjoy longer periods of rest and relaxation during the calendar years 2024 and 2025.

For December 2024, the government has declared that the holidays from December 28 (Saturday), December 29 (Sunday), and December 30 (Karen New Year) will be extended by adding December 31 (Tuesday) as a holiday. This creates a continuous holiday period lasting until January 1, 2025 (New Year’s Day). Similarly, in March 2025, March 12 (Tuesday) and March 14 (Thursday) will be designated as holidays to connect March 13 (Full Moon of Tabaung) with the weekend, forming an extended holiday period from March 12 to March 16.

In November 2025, the government has identified November 3 (Monday) as an additional holiday to create a continuous break between November 2 (Sunday) and November 4 (Full Moon of Tazaungmone). This results in a four-day holiday from November 2 to November 4. In December 2025, December 26 (Friday) will be designated as a holiday, creating a four-day break that includes Christmas Day on December 25, as well as December 27 (Saturday) and December 28 (Sunday).

To balance the extended holiday periods, substitute workdays have been assigned on specific Saturdays. For the first extended holiday (December 2024 to January 2025), the designated substitute workday was initially January 4, 2025, but since it coincides with Independence Day, the substitute workday has been shifted to January 11, 2025. For the second holiday in March 2025, the Saturdays of March 22 and March 29 will serve as substitute workdays. For the third holiday in November 2025, November 8, 2025, will be a substitute workday. For the fourth extended holiday period in December 2025, January 3, 2026, will be the designated substitute workday.
