On December 2, Thai authorities cut illegal internet cable lines found near the Thailand-Myanmar border at the Friendship Bridge No. 1, connecting Mae Sot and Myawady, on the Myanmar side.
Thai media reported that the large internet cables found near the Friendship Bridge were being used by scam networks involved in fraudulent activities.
Thai officials discovered that the internet cables near the Friendship Bridge No. 1 extended across the Thaungyin (Moei) River into Myawady, Myanmar.
In relation to the incident, Thai authorities held a press conference in Mae Sot on December 3.
During the investigation, Thai authorities found 16 large internet cables near the Friendship Bridge No. 1. These cables were confiscated as evidence, and officials stated that they would identify and take legal action against those responsible for the illegal cable installations.
Reports indicate that Myawady residents are currently unable to access the internet and can only communicate via telephone.
