The Bangkok Post reported that Temasek-backed Sembcorp Industries temporarily suspended operations at its Myingyan Independent Power Plant in Mandalay, Myanmar, on Monday.

The decision was made in response to escalating civil unrest in the region, including in Myingyan Township, where the 225-megawatt (MW) gas-fired power plant, Sembcorp Myingyan, is located.

Sembcorp Industries' 225-MW gas-fired power plant was officially opened in Myingyan Township, Mandalay Region, on March 16, 2019.

Under the previous government, the Electricity Generation Enterprise under the Ministry of Power and Energy implemented the 225-MW Natural Gas and Waste Heat Power Plant projects near the No. 1 Steel Factory in Myingyan Township through the IPP/BOT system.

To further increase electricity production, a contract was signed with V Power Holdings Ltd for a 90-MW gas engine-powered power plant near the No. 1 Steel Factory in Myingyan Township on November 7, 2018.

The Sembcorp Myingyan Independent Power Plant (IPP) successfully commenced full commercial operations on February 1, 2019, and was officially opened on March 3, 2019.

Reports indicate that 90 MW of electricity from the plant is being supplied to the national grid.

Additionally, a contract for the 225-MW Natural Gas and Waste Heat Power Plant near the No. 1 Steel Factory in Myingyan Township was signed with Sembcorp Myingyan Power Company on March 29, 2016. The company commenced commercial operations in two phases, on May 7 and October 2, 2018.

The power plant project includes two 71.5-MW gas turbines, with an 82-MW waste heat power plant (Steam Turbine Generation) constructed starting March 29, 2016. The necessary natural gas for the plant is supplied from Shwe Offshore.
